This isn’t the darkest black I’ve seen, but it makes nearly perfect neutrals and the opacity is nice. When I made this one, I cut it with about twenty percent whiting. The whiting doesn’t affect the color much but it does extend the pigment and it’s good for handling.
Black Roman Earth from Williamsburg or Rublev Roman Black are equivalent pigments. Of course, they’re not mulled in C. Howe’s Elixir Washed Virgin Oil.
