Current Research Activity
-
- Marble Print Drying Rack
- 2023 - present (in production, grant funded)
- I have designed a drying rack for holding sheets of paper, such as those used by printmakers and watercolor painters. Artists often use processes that make the paper wet and that paper needs to dry untouched, sometimes for a period of weeks in the case of an oil based ink. The product is currently in the manufacturing stage.
-
- Process and Equipment for measuring effectiveness of Saline Sulfate Etchant
- 2025 - present (on-going)
- Based on a hypothesis of conductivity being a marker of etchant effectiveness, I am working with Dr. William Carroll and Dr. Jon Moldenhauer in the Chemistry department at Tennessee Tech to develop measurement processes and equipment. This accounts for conductivity of the copper in solution as well as temperature of the solution.
-
- Novel Lift Grounds in Printmaking
- 2023 - present (writing results)
- I'm developing a new set of processes for intaglio printmaking. Lift grounds themselves aren't new but the use of common graphite pencils, wax crayons, and print offsets coupled with aqueous grounds is. Conventional intaglio printmaking is linear, with the artist using a scribe to incise a line through a dark color ground in order to reveal a light color mark of the bare metal. This is quite indirect, as the values are inverted. What is light becomes dark and dark becomes light. Existing lift grounds address this by allowing the artist to paint or draw with a dark color sugar based "ink" onto the bare plate. The plate is then coated with a bitumen based ground dissolved in a strong solvent. My processes make use of common drawing and writing tools such as graphite pencils and crayons. Minimal processing using readily available health safe water based grounds replace the toxic materials traditionally used. Through these materials and processes, significant barriers to intaglio printmaking are lifted.
-
- Synthesis and preparation of novel nanoscale pigments
- 2022 - present (on-going)
- I am working with Dr. William Carroll as his lab synthesized and characterized novel nanoscale pigments. My Painting students make the pigment into paint and evaluate its characteristics compared to commercially available samples.
-
- Pressure measurement of an etching press with voltage multimeter
- 2021 - present (on-going)
- I have developed a simple and inexpensive method for measuring and calibrating the pressure of an etching press. The method makes use of a carbon impregnated plastic (Velostat) and a voltage multimeter. Velostat is used in packing electronics to avoid static discharge. It becomes more conductive when pressure is applied.
-
- Software - drawN, a framework for drawing and generative art
- 2018 - present (on-going)
- This software, written in Java, includes SQLite database file storage, save and export methods, undo/redo, layers, multiple brushes, web accessible tools palette, keyboard shortcuts, and pen pressure.
