The exotic name of this color means Death’s Head in Latin. The name once referred to a brown color made from ground mummies. I often use this color to lay in the initial structure of the painting. I also use it in shadows when I want a something cooler than an umber and warmer than a violet. The consistency is loose without being oily. It’s a nice paint right from the tube. The Lukas brand was originally Dr.Franz Schoenfeld & Company. Jerry’s Artarama is the only US supplier that carries the brand at the moment.
